Gettysburg
On July 1-3, 1863 in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania one of the greatest wars in history took place. The union’s general George G. Meade led his army of around 85,000 men to victory at the battle of Gettysburg. The confederate general Robert E. Lee and his right hand man, Joseph Johnston, had an army of around 75,000. The total number of casualties for the union was about 23,000. The total number of casualties for the confederates was about 28,000. The battle of Gettysburg was the cause of Sherman’s March to the Sea. In November 1863, President Abraham Lincoln delivered the “Gettysburg Address” to a crowd of 15,000.
During the battle, a bullet flew through the only civilian’s house and killed her. Her name was Mary Virginia (Jenny) Wade. When the battle was over, Mary was put in a wooden casket and was put in the back of her sister's house. She stayed in her sister's backyard for 6 whole months. After 6 months, she was put into an actual cemetery near a church called the "German Reformed. The battle of Gettysburg was very important because it was the first major victory for the north ( UNION ). This also was very important because if it wasn't for the battle of Gettysburg, then President Lincoln would have probably never made the Gettysburg Address speech. This speech was delivered four and a half months after the battle of Gettysburg.
