Battle of Antietam
This is 'Bloody Lane'. On
the setting of Antietam battle this was a very violent scene.
On September 17, 1862, a battle that takes place in Shamburg, Maryland at Antietam Creek is forever remembered. This is a battle of great victory and vicious loss. By comparison, on the bloodiest single day of World War II, D-Day, the US forces lost only half as many men. This stage of the civil war is known as the bloodiest day in US history. With this great blood shed, it started spark in President Abraham Lincoln's eyes. This is one of the many causes to ensure the Emancipation Proclamation. Everywhere people see the battle as a terrible failure (which it was). However it also started hope for people of the Union and its' supporters.
This civil war fight was of course fought between the Union and the
Confederates. The Union being the north, and the south being the Confederates. The Union general was George McLean and the Confederate general was Robert E. Lee. The Battle be ginned with Robert E. Lee striding to Maryland, believing he
had well defensive maneuvers. Lee had another disadvantage because the Potomac River was behind him. Robert E. Lee had a exact plan thought out, but a copy of the blueprints got into the hands of Union General McLean. Lee, who had sent
some his army to capture Harper's Ferry, attempted to stop the Union commander failed. The two armies set up battlegrounds near the town of Sharps burg on either side of Antietam Creek. The most destructive parts of the battle took
place at Miller cornfield, the Dunker church, the sunken road. Later known as Bloody Lane. The final assault of the Union forced a bullet stream at Antietam bridge.
On September 18 Lee's army escaped leaving this another Union victory. To go to the statistics the Union had 87,000 soldiers, while the confederate had 45,000 which totaled out to 131,000 soldiers. Almost one- fourth
of these soldiers never saw daylight again. The total estimated casualties was 22,717. the Union had 2,109 killed, and 9,540 wounded, and 753 missing or captured. The confederates had 1,546 killed, 7,752 wounded, and 1,018 missing or captured. This was the evidence pf a great sadness among the Nation.
The Union army won this battle. This is a proven fact because Lee retreated from the North. This battle was important because it changed the on look of the war. Not only now did people want to join the Union, but ending slavery was the next big step. It also had a great significance because it gave Abraham Lincoln the opportunity to announce the Emancipation Proclamation. The slaves were freed because of this battle and new act. Also one of the reasons this battle started
was because the south wanted recognition from Europe and when the North won this battle it caused Great
Britain to think twice before joining the Confederacy.
